Lineart practice

Not the most original design, but a really good way to improve my line art skills.

The end

Hello my friends, the big project has ended. Completing this was a big challenge for me, especially the characters.

I can't give away too much of the storyline, but let's all hope for a quick release of this book. It was a joy to read and an honour to make the first visual impression of this fascinating book.

The story takes place in a world quite similar to our world, but once every fifteen years a big natural disaster takes place. Everything living in this world has adapted to this event. The main character in this book is going to experience his first disaster.

(for those who are wondering, the used language is dutch.)

This is the main character "Duf"

Of course there's a girl in this story!

The briefing asked for a completed sculpture based on one of the drawn characters. I chose for  "Lia" It wasn't easy to sculpt the female body, but I'm pretty happy with the result.

"Von" is a charming guy who get's into a lot trouble, and he always seems to find a way out of it.

"Nonkel" (dutch for uncle) takes care of "Duf". He is a really wise man. Together with "Teunis" and old friend (and a drunk) they're going to flee from this disaster in the family plane.

This is the masterpiece of the empire, similar to the titanic of our world.

The vehicle that Nonkel and Teunis will be using.

The home of Nonkel and Duf.

These are the pirates of this world, they roam the skies with one mission: bring down the empire.

 Some colourkeys.

I loved designing the "IronHarp", an instrument comparable to the harmonica. Instead of using reed resonators, this instrument uses air to vibrate strings. the four buttons on each side can be used to create harmonics. The instrument can be folded for easy transport.

This is the bussinesscard of a mad man. If he wants to see you, he WILL see you. Once this device is locked in to place, you have about 60 minutes to reach him or you will die. To top it all of, once locked, an annoying tune will begin to play.

Everything in this world operates on gas. The guns work exactly the same as traditional firearms, but instead of using gunpowder, these guns will use a small dose of gas as combustion.

To end this long post: a character in set (full colour) Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed this.

Hello my fellow artists.

This week I decided to take a break from the brainconsuming designs, and work on some graphic elements to increase the overal amosphere of my pitchbook. These drawings are done by hand (good ol' paper & pen) and there will be many, many more...

I also Included a set i Finished last weekend, which i'm pretty proud of
Next week I will continue working on some designs, and just maybe post some characters.
So stay tuned!

Cheers,
Maarten

Props to my... props?

Good evening my friends,

let me start with announcing that I  have 6 followers! So, on to the next 6?

I have some updates regarding my end project and I'm pretty exited to release them into the world.
Let me know what you think about it!

In a previous post i explained all their fuel is gas based (drawn from a flying whale like creature), so the weapons will also work on gas. the principle is the same as a traditional musket, only the combustion is created by a dosed gas injection

This is one of my favourite inventions from this make believe world: The Ironharp. it's a instrument similar to a harmonica, but instead of creating notes by reed, this little thing uses strings. The author was pretty vague in visually describing this instrument... so I had some fun with it

This little device begs for some explanation... It's the business card of a madman. if he wants to see you, he'll make sure that you WILL drop by. It is called the strangle-device. Once closed you have about 60 minutes to make sure you reach him or you will suffocate  and eventually, lose your head. And if that's not enough, once closed it starts playing a little nerving tune... I haven't figured out what this sounds like.

The final project

So my friends, the end is near.

Our final project in school ( @  Syntra Hasselt ) is starting to take form. In about two months we will face our judgement day! God it went by so fast.  In the meantime I'll try to post as many updates as possible.

So what is this project? I'm glad you ask... each one of us has a story, and each one of us will have to vizualize that story and create a Pitchbook. And yes, we will have to pitch this project, and yes I am very anxious about that. At this point I can not give away the story I'm working on, though I can say that is is a very cool book written by a teacher in my school. What I can give away is the concept art that I'm creating.

The story takes place somewhere around 1800 and mankind has already mastered the art of flying! Their main fuel source is a natural gas comming from flying whale-like creatures. Now the tricky part is that similar artwork has been done many many times before I got my hands on this beautiful concept. The big challange will be to come up with something new... so stand by me.

Regarding the aircrafts in this story, I'm going to focus around two main Aircrafts. One humongous airship and a small personal airplane/airship combo.

I hope you liked it so far
More to come so stay tuned!

cheers,
Maarten
